Needrup Zangpo is a distinguished media professional and communications strategist with over 20 years of experience shaping Bhutan’s media and civil society landscape. He has held several influential leadership roles, including Executive Director of the Bhutan Media Foundation and the Journalists’ Association of Bhutan. His editorial journey began at the Bhutan Observer, where he rose from Deputy Editor to Editor-in-Chief, and continued through roles at the Bhutan Centre for Media and Democracy and his own consultancy, Druk Lotēr. Currently, he serves as a writing, editing, and translation consultant and holds board positions in prominent organizations such as Kuensel Corporation Limited, NetCom Bhutan, and Lhaksam.
Needrup’s contributions extend beyond journalism to thought leadership and cultural preservation. He has edited, authored, or translated over 25 books and major publications across genres—from historical narratives and creative non-fiction to Buddhist commentaries and government reports. His recent work includes Drukpa Kunley: Sacred Tales of a Mad Monk (HarperCollins, 2024) and anthologies such as Bhutan at Her Best and Life and Living Amid Covid-19. As Editor-in-Chief of De-Suung Magazine and editor for national publications like Tashi Delek, he has consistently elevated Bhutanese voices and narratives to a broader audience.
A recognised public intellectual, Needrup has been a board member of institutions such as the Media Council of Bhutan, the Civil Society Organisations Authority, and the Centre for Research on Bhutanese Society. He has also served as Chairperson of the Media Studies Subject Committee under the Royal Education Council. His research and essays—published in journals like The Druk Journal and Rabsel—tackle timely topics such as media ethics, social media literacy, voter behavior, and education quality. His commitment to democratic discourse, transparency, and informed citizenship is evident in both his academic and civic engagements.
Educated in Bhutan and abroad, Needrup holds a BA (Honours) in English Literature from Sherubtse College and has completed prestigious fellowships and training in Singapore, Denmark, Germany, and India. He is multilingual and digitally literate, with advanced proficiency in editing tools, social media, and communication platforms. With a passion for media development, Bhutanese culture, and public service, Needrup Zangpo continues to serve as a guiding force in Bhutan’s evolving narrative landscape.
